Series one, episode seven of the Ground Transport Media podcasts is titled ‘You can’t just zone out!’ and talks all about Licensing and Compliance, Best Practice, Regulations, Drivers, Understanding the law, The London Industry, ULEZ and more.

Recorded in front of a live audience from Wembley Stadium at the 2022 Ground Transport Show, hosted by the brilliant John Curtis, this episode features the following people:

Cliff Llewellyn – Former TfL TPH Compliance Manage

I joined TfL TPH in 2002 as the first TPH compliance manager working with both trades, to continue the smooth take over from the met police and to work with the newly licensed PH trade to introduce the new London 1998 Act and regs. After 17 years I left as senior compliance manager and I believe I, and my teams, made a big difference for safety to the travelling public, sometimes from themselves, by operator checks, on street enforcement and prosecutions to name a few.

Dave Lawrie – Director – NPHTA (National Private Hire and Taxi Association)

Having been a licensee for over 20 years, watching how the majority of the industry are subjected to abuse, by passengers, legislation, conditions, and policies, I decided to stand up for the industry, giving them a voice and support, it is a thankless task, and often open to criticism, the results are all that matter, we are a recognised stake holder, having achieved recognition and some changes. There is a lot more to do, with many more changes on the horizon, but with the combined voice of strength and unity, we will get through it, supporting members.

Matthew Jaffa – Senior External Affairs Manager (London) – Federation of Small Business

Matthew is the FSB’s chief London spokesperson and leads on London policy issues affecting small businesses. He also worked in the national policy team working on education and skills, and transport policy. Prior to working at the FSB, Matthew worked in the Cabinet Office in the Better Regulation Executive looking at European Regulatory Impact Assessment and the Strategy Unit, where he was a researcher on various strategic projects.

Steve Garelick – Union Officer – GMB

With over 30 years trade experience Steve has a firm understanding of legislation and engagement with Government at a National and Local level and has been involved with primary legislation. Steve is engaged in protection of drivers and has represented many over the years. During his tenure as Branch secretary Steve arranged for funding of the Uber Worker rights case and worked with Leigh Day to bring the case to fruition. Steve is responsible for Transport, Logistics & the gig economy for GMB Union and is a contributor to the TUC AI manifesto as well as a trustee for two charities.
